The Chicago Fraternal Order of Police renewed its calls for an investigation into Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx’s “interference” in the charges against Jussie Smollett.
“There was no justice that happened today. And it’s a disgrace,” the Fraternal Order of Police president Kevin Graham told Fox News Tuesday evening. “It’s a disgrace to the police officers that work so hard … They worked that case and all they got for their hard work was told, no, we’re going to let him go.”
Illinois state prosecutors announced Tuesday that they were dropping the charges against Smollett, who Chicago Police said filed a false police report alleging that he was the victim of a hate crime.
“The conduct of her office from the very beginning of this case was highly, highly suspicious,” FOP’s second vice president, Martin Preib, said to the Chicago Sun-Times about Foxx. “The evidence is overwhelming that he was legitimately charged in this case. This decision [to drop the charges] appears to be utterly arbitrary, capricious and suspicious.”
In January, Smollett, who is an actor on “Empire,” filed a police report that alleged he was attacked by two men who yelled racist and homophobic slurs during the attack. Last month, police said that it appears Smollett staged the attack and filed a fake police report.
He faced 16 felony charges, all of which were dropped.
Chicago’s Mayor Rahm Emanuel said Foxx dropping the charges is a “whitewash of justice.”
