CNN contributor Scott Jennings rebuked Michigan Rep. Justin Amash on Sunday, arguing that the congressman left the GOP merely for “political expediency.”
Amash, who was also the network earlier that hour, declared his independence from the GOP on the Fourth of July.

“What a burden it must be to be the smartest person in a room full of 435 people. He says he went to the Freedom Caucus and tried to change things and nobody would listen, ‘I went to my committee hearings and nobody would listen. And now, I’m going to leave everything.’ I didn’t think it was possible for him to be more irrelevant in Congress, but he found a way,” Jennings began.
“The reality is, with his voting record and views on the president he could not win a Republican primary in Michigan,” he continued. “This was not born out of principle. This was born out of political expediency and he is going to run for re-election maybe, unless he runs for president. But the fact is this guy has never been able to work with others, he’s never affected change on behalf of his district and to go and blame everybody else to me strikes me that the people of Michigan might want somebody else.”
Prior to leaving the party, Amash was ostracized after leaving the House Freedom Caucus after being one of the founding members. He was also the only Republican congressman to claim that the Mueller report showed evidence of “impeachable conduct” on the part of President Trump.
Great news for the Republican Party as one of the dumbest & most disloyal men in Congress is “quitting” the Party. No Collusion, No Obstruction! Knew he couldn’t get the nomination to run again in the Great State of Michigan. Already being challenged for his seat. A total loser!

Amash’s comments drew the ire of Trump, who called Amash’s departure “great news” for the Republican Party.
