The Trump-Jackson Dinner

At a dinner Wednesday night in Washington, Donald Trump compared his victory—and his forthcoming presidency—to that of Andrew Jackson almost two centuries ago. “‘There hasn’t been anything like this since Andrew Jackson,’ Mr. Trump quoted his admirers saying.”

I thought it might therefore be of interest to reproduce highlights of Jackson’s first inaugural address. My only editorial comment would be this: One hopes that, inspired perhaps by Jackson’s example, Trump grasps that American-style populism is not incompatible with a certain dignity of tone and elevation of spirit.
