Kids’ field of dreams in MontCo

Next Monday, kids who probably never thought they’d play baseball will get to step up to the plate when Montgomery County Parks and the Washington Nationals Dream Foundation officially open a new baseball field for special needs kids. Called the Washington Nationals Miracle Field, the field is set to open Monday at the South Germantown Recreational Park. The field is designed for children with mental or physical disabilities who want to play baseball. It includes a cushioned synthetic turf that allows children using wheelchairs and walkers to “run” the bases without fear of injury. The Miracle League is a nonprofit organization that helps children with mental and/or physical challenges play baseball as a team. The Montgomery County league is the first in Maryland and will serve children in the surrounding counties, the District and Virginia. — Liz Farmer
