WATCH: Georgia principal on administrative leave after using racial slur

A Georgia principal is on administrative leave after he was caught on camera using a racial slur.

“Cracker. Cracker is slang for white, and it’s the antonym to n*****, which is a very offensive comment, right?” the principal, Jeff Cheney, says in a secretly recorded video captured by an East Forsyth High School student. “So it’s almost like saying that to a white person.”

“What am I calling you that is so bad?” the male student had asked in the video while filming the ceiling.

While the principal doesn’t appear in the video, the high school acknowledged that it is Cheney’s voice. He is now reportedly on voluntary administrative leave from Forsyth County Schools for an undetermined length of time.

There were other staff members present during the conversation, and school officials clarified that “the goal of the meeting was for the student to understand that we must all be sensitive and respectful to others.”

“I am writing to inform you that Principal Jeff Cheney has requested a temporary leave of absence to have time to reflect, process, and move forward,” Superintendent Dr. Jeff Bearden reportedly wrote in a letter to families. “I have approved his request and will continue to stay in contact with him. Forsyth County Schools believes that at no time and in no context should any variation of the N word be used. Students and adults make mistakes; our school district believes that we all can learn from our mistakes.”

It is unclear if the anonymous student in question faced further disciplinary measures for calling Cheney a name.
