Sabourin and DiCostanzo are members of Arlington-based comedic band Paul and Storm. They recently raised $7,270.12 for Arlington Food Assistance Center when DiCostanzo devoured an entire 48 fluid oz. Carvel “Fudgie the Whale” ice cream cake.

Why did you create the challenge?

D: It came out of boredom. I was on Twitter and I noticed we were just a couple hundred followers short from 10,000. By noon, I said I would eat an entire Fudgie the Whale cake. The next day we were straight past the number and it became a topic of a lot of discussion. Our friends at ThinkGeek thought they’d like to get involved and make it an event. We decided, Why don’t we raise money for charity?

Why was a Fudgie the Whale cake the food of choice? Any runner-ups?

D: Originally when thinking of a tweet, we had a Cookie Puss in mind. But when we found that it would be a third larger than Fudgie the Whale, it became a little much for me to handle.

Are there special strategies for eating a whole whale?

D: I didn’t put a lot of thought into it. I didn’t want to get sick, so I drank a lot of water leading up to the event and didn’t starve myself but ate light meals.

Why didn’t Paul eat the cake as well?

S: I’ve known Storm for over a year. One of his superpowers is to consumer large quantities of food if he puts his mind to it. I live three hours away, so I was eating the cake in spirit. I’m not clinically insane like Storm.

Any future challenges you’d be willing to take for another 10,000 Twitter followers?

S: We are hatching schemes. I’m up for a burrito eating contest or challenge. Maybe a burrito walkathon.
