Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley will make an announcement Friday about sponsoring a bill in the 2012 General Assembly that would permit gay marriage in the state.
Right now, he’s not revealing his stance. But going out on arguably the world’s smallest limb, we at The Washington Examiner can project with 99.9 percent accuracy that he’ll once again push for legalizing same-sex matrimony.
Via a statement from his office: “Tomorrow, Governor Martin O’Malley will announce his decision regarding sponsorship of same sex marriage legislation in the 2012 legislative session.”
The speech is scheduled for 2 p.m. from the governor’s reception room in Annapolis.
When contacted by The Examiner, a spokeswoman for the governor refused to say whether the governor would sponsor such legislation.
O’Malley supported a same-sex marriage bill this year that was unable to gain enough support in the Maryland House of Delegates. A coalition of religious lawmakers from Prince George’s County and conservatives ultimately kept the legislation from being enacted — a somewhat stunning development since the House is the more liberal of the two chambers.
The governor also previously said that New York’s passage of gay marriage boded well for supporters of same-sex matrimony in Maryland.
