Joe Biden wins Virginia primary, a significant Super Tuesday prize

Former Vice President Joe Biden won Virginia’s primary.

A call in Biden’s favor was made as soon as polls closed Tuesday night.

The early call could indicate a good night for Biden, who has racked up big-name endorsements and secured contributions from wealthy donors after his blowout victory in South Carolina’s primary on Saturday.

Fourteen states are voting on Super Tuesday, when more than a third of delegates are awarded. A total of 1,991 delegates are needed to win the Democratic nomination at the party’s national convention this summer.

Virginia, which has 99 delegates, was Biden’s first win of the night. It was not immediately clear how many of the delegates Biden would win.

He is expected to do well in Southern states, which have demographic similarities to Virginia’s southern tier.
