LARGO, Fla. (AP) — A Tampa Bay area man who fled to Texas after causing a drunken-driving crash that killed a passenger has been sentenced to 12 years in prison.

A Pinellas County judge sentenced 33-year-old Garrett Bruce on Monday. He had previously pleaded no contest to DUI manslaughter. He returns to court Friday, when he could receive additional time for previously failing to appear in court.

Bruce was arrested near Houston in February. Authorities say he had been missing since the month prior when he removed an ankle monitor and left Florida with his wife and two young boys.

Authorities say Bruce was driving drunk in December 2011 when he hit a concrete pole, killing 26-year-old Patrick Vosbein. The men worked together at a Papa John’s Pizza in Tarpon Springs.
