Former ethics chief Walter Shaub slams Trump for promoting supporter’s book

Walter Shaub, former U.S. Office of Government Ethics director, hit out at President Trump Sunday, castigating him for promoting a campaign surrogate’s book during Hurricane Harvey.

“If you’re going to misuse the presidency to hawk junk, could you also use this platform to drum up hurricane relief?” Shaub, who resigned in July over the Trump administration’s lax approach to ethics, wrote on Twitter.

He attached a link to the American Red Cross’s Hurricane Harvey donation website.

Shaub was referring to an earlier tweet from Trump Sunday about a new book by Sheriff David Clarke of Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, called Cop Under Fire: Moving Beyond Hashtags of Race, Crime and Politics for a Better America.

“A great book by a great guy, highly recommended!” the president tweeted.

Clarke, who spoke at the 2016 Republican National Convention about his support of Trump as the law and order candidate, also took to social media to tweet in his defense.

“The deranged lib left is soiling their underwear in excitement over politicizing Tropical Storm Harvey to use against @realDonaldTrump,” Clarke wrote. “MAGA.”

Shaub has been a vocal critic of the Trump administration, even before he quit as ethics chief. He told PBS in July the White House had “set a tone from the top that ethics doesn’t matter.”
