Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu congratulated President-elect Donald Trump Wednesday on his victory, professing an eagerness to work with Trump toward a stronger U.S.-Israel alliance.
“Congratulations on being elected president of the United States of America,” Netanyahu said in a video posted on social media. “You are a great friend of Israel.”
Trump has repeatedly attacked President Obama on his treatment of Israel, calling his administration a “disaster” for the Middle Eastern ally.
Netanyahu acknowledged Trump’s friendly rhetoric toward his country in his congratulatory message.
“Over the years, you’ve expressed your support consistently, and I deeply appreciate it,” the Israeli prime minister said. “I look forward to working with you to advance security, prosperity and peace.”
Netanyahu reportedly planned to call Trump Wednesday in addition to his video and statement, according to Israeli news outlet Channel 2 News.
Trump will begin to receive the same briefings as Obama on Wednesday as he prepares to transition into power. Netanyahu was one of several world leaders who extended their congratulations to the president-elect in the hours after votes were counted.
“Israel is grateful for the broad support it enjoys among the American people,” Netanyahu said. “And I am confident that the two of us working closely together will bring the great alliance between our two countries to even greater heights.”
