Chris Christie launches group to protect Senate Republicans amid impeachment

Chris Christie is launching a seven-figure offensive to help Senate Republicans amid President Trump’s impeachment.

Christie’s issue advocacy organization, Right Direction America, is expected to begin a TV and digital advertising campaign on Monday in key 2020 Senate races, including Alabama, Arizona, Colorado, Iowa, Maine, and North Carolina, according to Politico.

The former New Jersey governor’s efforts are a counterweight to those of liberal billionaire Tom Steyer, who is running for president in 2020 and whose organization, Need to Impeach, is targeting Senate Republicans over impeachment.

Need to Impeach has spent about $3.5 million across a handful of states to pressure individual GOP senators, and it’s running a $350,000 national TV ad campaign going after Republicans. A spokesman for Steyer’s group said it is likely it will pump more funding into its efforts during the Senate impeachment trial.

“I really think there has been a lack of attention on the positive things the administration has done for the country and a tremendous amount of attention on the negativity, particularly from groups like Tom Steyer’s impeachment group. And I’ve always tried to get the other part of the story out there to the people, and I was tired of sitting around and waiting for someone else to do it,” Christie said.

Christie, who is chairman of the group, said he has not spoken with Trump about the organization.
