A law professor at Harvard University is claiming 20 Republican members of the Electoral College are considering voting against President-elect Donald Trump.
Larry Lessig announced earlier this month he would offer free legal assistance to electors who want to vote against Trump but live in states where it’s illegal to do so.
If all 20 voted against the billionaire, it would put the anti-Trump movement well on its way to blocking Trump’s election.
“Obviously, whether an elector ultimately votes his or her conscience will depend in part upon whether there are enough doing the same. We now believe there are more than half the number needed to change the result seriously considering making that vote,” Lessig told Politico on Tuesday.
He shared no evidence that 20 Republican electors will break with the party.
But sources at the Republican National Committee, which launched a whip operation intended to lock down Trump’s Electoral College majority, told Politico that it’s only found one Republican elector who will not remain loyal to the president-elect.
Five-hundred and thirty-eight electors will cast their votes as part of the Electoral College process on Dec. 19. Three-hundred and six are Republican, while 232 are Democrats.
Trump is expected to easily pass the 270 threshold.
