President-elect Trump spoke by phone with Pakistani Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif on Wednesday, after which the public relations arm of Pakistan’s government issued a statement about the two men’s conversation that quickly went viral.
“Pakistan is an amazing country with tremendous opportunities. Pakistanis are one of the most intelligent people,” Trump was quoted as saying, according to a readout of the call posted by the Pakistani Ministry of Information, Broadcasting and National Heritage.
Trump transition officials confirmed to reporters that the call took place Wednesday morning, but did not comment on what was discussed. A transition spokesman did not return the Washington Examiner’s request for comment.
Reporters initially questioned the statement’s authenticity, then mocked its unpolished tone.
This could only be better if it was followed up by a shot of Trump trying to find Pakistan on the map. https://t.co/0UKv0zSdtF
