Washington Free Beacon reporter files bid for Congress

A reporter for the Washington Free Beacon filed to run for a congressional seat in Maryland on Friday.

Matthew Foldi resigned from the conservative news outlet Friday morning and filed to run in the Republican primary for Maryland‘s 6th Congressional District, the outlet announced.

“His unrefrigerated bottle of sriracha will be missed,” the publication’s editor in chief Eliana Johnson said. “Foldi may not be able to clean his desk, but we trust he would do a better job cleaning up Congress.”

Foldi is known for his investigative reports. Last week, for example, he co-authored a story about how dozens of Democratic members of Congress kept their offices in pandemic mode despite the spread of the coronavirus cooling down.

He appeared on Tucker Carlson Tonight last year to discuss his reporting about how Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm held shares in a green energy company despite her position.

Foldi served as the Fifth Ward Republican committeeman in Chicago. He also served as an assistant to Comfortably Smug, who co-hosts the conservative Ruthless Podcast.

“Foldi is one of the brightest, hardest working, and honest people I’ve met in my life. Voters in Maryland would be fortunate to have him in office,” Smug tweeted Friday.

The congressional seat is held by Democratic Rep. David Trone, who is running for reelection in the district. He co-founded Total Wine, an alcohol retailer, and was elected to the seat in 2018.

A Republican was last elected to the seat during the 2010 election. Under Maryland’s new congressional map, the seat is considered a toss-up by FiveThirtyEight. In the Republican primary, Foldi will face off against Neil Parrott, who lost a bid for the seat to Trone in 2020. Republican Mariela Roca may also enter the race, the Washington Free Beacon noted. The primary is slated to take place on July 19.
