BOSTON (AP) — Former Mayor Raymond L. Flynn is backing east Boston residents who are fighting a $1 billion resort casino proposal at Suffolk Downs.
Flynn appeared at a protest on Saturday and told the Boston Herald (http://bit.ly/KkYgwP ) that there’s a better use for the property. He said local residents are dedicated and conscientious and deserve to be heard and respected.

The Suffolk Downs casino would have to be voted on in a neighborhood referendum. Opponents and Flynn are pushing for a citywide vote. The ex-mayor says voters in Boston can consider the casino proposal more objectively and conclude that the city needs jobs, but not with the casino plan.
