Rep. Justin Amash, who faced a likely removal from his committee and GOP conference membership, announced in a letter Monday he is resigning from both.
The decision came a day ahead of a GOP steering committee vote that would have likely removed Amash from the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee.
The Michigan independent said in a July 4 op-ed he would leave the GOP in a move that followed his call for President Trump’s impeachment.
The libertarian and former House Freedom Caucus member wrote to GOP leaders Monday afternoon, “I am withdrawing my membership in the House Republican Conference, effective immediately, for the reasons outlined in my accompanying op-ed.”
Amash told the GOP he is also leaving his post on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee.
Amash faced certain removal from the committee, and most members believed he had already left the conference by writing the op-ed, a top GOP aide told the Washington Examiner.
