Registration opened a week ago for the 31st Marine Corps Marathon, and there still are 2,000 slots available, though they are expected to go fast.
“I would think probably a couple more days, but I wouldn’t expect it to go much longer,” race spokeswoman Beth Cline said Tuesday.
In 2005, the 30,000 berths were filled in 62 hours and 19 minutes. This year, with another 4,000 slots added, filling the ranks is taking a few extra days.
The race is scheduled for Oct. 29.
Cline said another 4,000 racers should not overwhelm the 26.2-mile route, which winds through Arlington and the District and ends at the Marine Corps War Memorial near Arlington Cemetery. The race director and his logistics advisers found 34,000 runners to be “the magic number,” she said.
“For now,” Cline said, “let’s see how that goes.”
