House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Richard Neal will decide on his next step in obtaining President Trump’s tax returns on Friday.
“I’m not going to let this languish,” the Massachusetts Democrat told reporters Thursday.
Neal has hinted that he may sue for the tax documents.
A committee source told the Washington Examiner that the Trump administration had yet to provide a legal memo outlining its justification for withholding the information.
Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said that the Justice Department would draft one at his request in his final refusal of Neal’s demand for Trump’s tax returns, which he relayed Monday.

Neal is seeking Trump’s tax information under a provision of tax law that empowers the committee chairman to confidentially review tax returns.
The conflict between Neal and Mnuchin is likely to head to the courts. Legal experts see the administration’s refusal to hand over documents as more of a political stalling tactic than a winning legal strategy.
