Loudoun County school counselor charged with sexually abusing student

A female Loudoun County Public Schools counselor was charged with sexually abusing a former high school student Thursday, according to a county sheriff’s office press release.

Ann Barrett of Ashburn, Virginia, was “charged with taking indecent liberties with a child by a custodian” and promptly turned herself in following the charges, the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office said.

The sheriff’s office said it was notified of the allegation in May and immediately began investigating. Barrett served as a counselor at Freedom High School in Chantilly, Virginia, and the abuse took place from 2013 to 2015. No details about the victim, who is no longer a student, were released.

Under Virginia law, “indecent liberties with a child” covers a wide range of child-related sex crimes, ranging from genital exposure to sexual intercourse.

LCPS has been under substantial scrutiny for its handling of a sexual assault by a male student on May 28 at a county high school, the same month the sheriff’s office began investigating allegations against Barrett. That student was allowed to attend a different school in the fall and was subsequently charged with a second assault in October. County students staged a walkout protest in October over the school board’s handling of the case.
