GREENVILLE, Miss. (AP) — Supermarket chain Kroger is shutting down its store on U.S. Highway 82 in Greenville, idling 70 workers.
Kroger announced this week the store will close Aug. 23.

Kroger spokesman Joe Bell tells the Delta Democrat-Times (http://bit.ly/1l0Bjvw ) the U.S. 82 location’s current sales volume isn’t there to maintain the store.
The U.S. 82 grocery opened in 1969 and was the chain’s first in Greenville.
Bell says employees will be offered jobs at other Kroger-owned groceries.
Bell says Kroger’s other grocery on Martin Luther King Boulevard in Greenville will remain open. It opened in December 1994.
Bell says the U.S. 82 store is the first that Kroger’s Delta Division has closed this year. The division comprises all of Arkansas and Mississippi and southwest Kentucky, southern Missouri and western Tennessee.
