Ask Hal Maxwell to break into a song, and you may end up wondering why this guy isn?t on stage.

In fact, he was.

In the 1980s, long before he became president and chief operating officer of Columbia-based Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage Mid-Atlantic, Maxwell was a Broadway actor.

But he hung up his role as Daddy Warbucks in the play “Annie” because acting was taking a toll on family life. “In the first year of my first son?s life, I was in town a total of three weeks,” Maxwell said.

As a military brat, he knew what it was like to constantly move or not see your father much. “I decided it was time to put down roots,” Maxwell said.

He already had a degree in business and decided to get into real estate. “I was always a believer in investing in your future, and real estate was part of it,” Maxwell said.

As president and COO of Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage, Hal Maxwell oversees one of the largest full-service real estate companies in the Mid-Atlantic region. His responsibilities include Maryland, Delaware, Washington and Northern Virginia. Maxwell oversees more than 100 sales and rental offices, as well as multiple client-service operations like title, mortgage and relocation. And hemanages more than 4,600 sales associates offering a full range of individual real estate services to their clients.

Ronnie Laiken, president and chief operating office of Coldwell Banker New Jersey, credits Maxwell for helping her career.

“Way back in New Jersey, when Hal was a manager, he encouraged me to seek the president?s job,” Laiken said. “He has a very positive, can-do it attitude. He is extremely people-oriented,” she said.

With 22 years in the business, Maxwell maintains a philosophy grounded in staying focused on “basic business principles.” He is also a firm believer in giving back to the community.

Maxwell?s most recent initiative is a pledge to financially sponsor and build two Habitat for Humanity International homes a year. Realtors started work on the first home in June of 2004.
