British boatman floats away with win in Annapolis

Joe Woods of the United Kingdom left opponents seeing Red all weekend.

Competing against more than 1,000 sailors from across the globe, Woods was named the overall winner Monday of the Annapolis National Offshore One Design Regatta, guiding his Melges 32-class boat, Red.

The British captain claimed a pair of bullets ? first-place wins, for landblubbers ? and no worse than a sixth-place finish in any individual race despite competing in a fleet of 15 boats. Woods? win earns him a trip to Sunsail in the British Virgin Islands in November to compete at the championship event against winners from each of the eight other stops on the Sperry Top-Sider NOOD Regatta series.

Other local winners included: Timothy Williams, of Annapolis, in the Alberg 30, Praley Syndicate, of Baltimore, in the Cal 25, Todd Hiller, of Annapolis, in the J/22 and Bob Oberg, of Annapolis, in the Star division. The tour attracts more than 2,000 boats and 30,000 competitors and spectators annually.

Future stops on the tour started in 1988 include Seattle on May 16 to18, and St. Petersburg, Fla., San Diego, Detroit, Chicago, Marblehead, Mass., Larchmont, N.Y., and Houston later this summer.
