Fire damages Annapolis community

High winds fanned a five-alarm fire to three homes in a waterfront community of Anne Arundel on Sunday, displacing at least five residents and causing about $2 million in damage, county fire authorities said Monday.

Firefighters were called about 10:25 p.m. to the Oyster Harbor community in the Annapolis Neck peninsula of the county, where a two-story home on the 3300 block of Shore Drive was completely engulfed in flames, with high winds spreading the flames to two nearby homes, authorities said.

The flames were hot enough to damage the siding of three homes across the street as well as burn through fire hoses and damage a fire engine, authorities said. The fire was under control within three hours, leaving three adults and two children displaced from two homes. Residents of a third home that caught fire were not home, officials said.

Two firefighters suffered minor injuries, but no residents were injured, officials said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, officials said.
