More than 14,000 customers around the Baltimore metropolitan area were left without power Friday afternoon, according to Baltimore Gas and Electric. At 2:30 p.m., BGE reported that about 12,500 customers in southwest Baltimore and another 1,500 in Baltimore County were without power.
A BGE spokesman said an overhead line that feeds a Catonsville-area substation went down. Some customers were taken offline as the company worked to restore power. At least 12 schools in the area closed early due to the outages.
The spokesman said that BGE hoped to restore power to all of its customers by 4 p.m.
At mid-day, the National Weather Service reported that temperatures in the area were hovering at 95 degrees with a heat index of more than 100 degrees.
