BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — Sen. Mark Grisanti has been defeated by attorney Kevin Stocker in the Republican primary in western New York’s competitive 60th Senate District.

Stocker had attacked Grisanti’s support for stricter gun controls pushed by Gov. Andrew Cuomo and for his key 2011 vote as one of four Republicans who favored legalizing same-sex marriage in New York. Grisanti was the only one of the four who voted for gay marriage still in office after surviving a primary challenge from Stocker in 2012 and defeating Democratic and Conservative party opponents in the general election.

In the district’s Democratic primary, former Sen. Alfred Coppola was defeated by attorney Marc Panepinto, who had the party’s backing. Panepinto also has the Working Families Party line, attorney Timothy Gallagher is on the Conservative line and Grisanti is on the Independence Party line.
