Time features Pete Buttigieg and husband in ‘First Family’ cover

Presidential hopeful Pete Buttigieg is featured on the cover of Time magazine’s most recent issue, along with his husband Chasten Buttigieg.

The cover of the magazine depicts the Buttigieg’s and calls them “First Family: The unlikely, untested and unprecedented campaign of Mayor Pete Buttigieg.” Buttigieg, who served as a naval intelligence reserve officer in Afghanistan, officially launched his 2020 presidential campaign last month and is consistently ranked third in polling data on 2020 candidates.

“Buttigieg is a gay Episcopalian veteran in a party torn between identity politics and heartland appeals,” Time wrote. “He’s also a fresh face in a year when millennials are poised to become the largest eligible voting bloc. Many Democrats are hungry for generational change, and the two front runners are more than twice his age.”

The cover story also describes how Pete and Chasten Buttigieg met in 2015 on the dating app Hinge and were married in June 2018. Additionally, it characterized Pete Buttigieg, 37, as President Trump’s “polar opposite” in many ways.

“In many ways, Buttigieg is Trump’s polar opposite: younger, dorkier, shorter, calmer and married to a man. His success may depend on whether Democrats want a fighter to match Trump, or whether Americans want to ‘change the channel,’ as Buttigieg puts it. ‘People already have a leader who screams and yells,’ he says. ‘How do you think that’s working out for us?’” Time wrote.

Pete Buttigieg, mayor of South Bend, Ind., is one of more than 20 candidates running in the Democratic primary race. He joins candidates including former Vice President Joe Biden, Sens. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., and Kamala Harris, D-Calif.
