Treasury secretary: We’ll get back any lost economic growth from shutdown

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin told the Washington Examiner that the government shutdown could hurt economic growth “this quarter” but “we’ll get it back once the shutdown is over.”

Mnuchin commented after his speech at the U.S. Conference of Mayors Winter Meeting on Thursday.

White House Council of Economic Advisers Chairman Kevin Hassett told CNN this week that there might be no gross domestic product growth this quarter because of the ongoing government shutdown. Last quarter, the GDP rose 3.4 percent. The economy grew at 4.2 percent in the previous quarter.

House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Richard Neal, D-Mass., said earlier this week that Mnuchin declined to testify before the committee about the effects of the shutdown.
