Aubinoe, 45, of Bethesda, founded One Life One Legacy to honor everyday heroes with inspirational T-shirts. For every shirt it sells, the business promises to give a new shirt to a child in need.
How’d you come up with the idea?
My 6-year-old daughter, Zoe, was the impetus. She was born with severe congenital heart defects and has survived several surgeries and countless complications and setbacks. She persevered with grace and passion and is now a thriving kindergartner. She is my personal hero, and I know that there are so many more stories like hers — of people who inspire others through acts big and small. I created my company and Web site [www.onelifeonelegacy.com] to honor these everyday heroes and use their stories to inspire others to create their own legacy. I also wanted a way to give back, so I created the One Sold, One Given Campaign, where for every shirt sold, we will give one to a child in need.
Who are the heroes and what are their slogans?
Zoe’s is “Live passionately, love deeply, believe in miracles.” Scott Hax battled with brain cancer. He was one of the most giving people. His slogan was, “Be kind, give of yourself & smile.” Mackenzie was a straight-A student, a black belt in karate, an avid skier and snowboarder, a swimmer and an inspiration to many in her short life. Her dad, Dr. Benjamin Papoi has opened a free health care clinic to honor his daughter. Her motto was “Live, Laugh and Love.”
How many heroes are there?
Currently, there are six heroes. Most live in the D.C. area.
Who are the children who will receive the T-shirts?
We’ll begin our focus locally, but hope to branch out to children’s charities throughout the world.
