Khan was ousted from his prime minister post via a no-confidence vote on April 10. Shehbaz Sharif, the new prime minister, will serve out the remainder of Khan’s term until a general election is held in 2023.
The former prime minister accused Donald Lu, the assistant U.S. secretary of state for the Bureau of South and Central Asian affairs, of playing a role in a conspiracy to overthrow his government on April 3. A State Department spokesperson told the Washington Examiner there is no truth to Khan’s claims.
