Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton believes Donald Trump went overboard with his jokes at last Thursday’s annual Al Smith Dinner in New York City, at which he was booed after making several jokes about his opponent.
“Well, I think the people there sure did, because they expressed their disapproval during his presentation,” Clinton said when asked in a radio interview if Trump went too far. “I’ve been to that event before, and it is an opportunity to raise millions of dollars for worthy causes, particularly for inner-city kids.”
“And so the purpose of it is to have an evening of fun, some gentle jabs, and some jokes at each other’s expense, including ones about yourself,” Clinton said. “And he just went over — too far, and I think that was why people reacted so strongly.”
The crowd became upset when the GOP nominee told those at the event that Clinton’s attendance at the dinner was an instance of her “pretending not to hate Catholics,” referring to emails by Clinton communications director Jennifer Palmieri released as part of the WikiLeaks dump of John Podesta’s emails.
Trump also tried to make a joke about how Clinton is “so corrupt,” pointing to her getting kicked off the Watergate Commission, which was roundly received by boos.
