An elderly couple’s home was burglarized by a group of men posing as Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission employees, Montgomery County police said.
Police said Friday that two men approached the home of an 86-year-old man in the 19500 block of Scenery Drive in Germantown at about 2 p.m. on Jan. 28, and said they worked for WSSC.
The men said there had been a water main break and they needed to check the pipes in the basement, convincing the man and his wife to accompany them.
While they were in the basement, police said, a third suspect entered the home and took a safe containing jewelry. The two suspects in the basement fled the home when the victims heard a noise upstairs. The victims saw the suspects drive away, and noticed that the closet door in the master bedroom had been pried open, Montgomery County police spokeswoman Lucille Baur said.
One suspect is described as about 55 years old, about 5 feet 10 inches tall and 185 pounds. Another is described as 25 years old, 5 feet 8 inches tall and 145 pounds. The third is described as 35 years old and 5 feet 6 inches tall. They were driving a silver pickup truck with a wide back end.
