Sen. Tom Cotton of Arkansas is putting his political muscle behind Republican efforts to confirm President Trump’s forthcoming Supreme Court nominee before Election Day.
Cotton announced Friday in a Twitter post that he had assembled a war room to promote Trump’s pick and defend her from attacks by Democrats. On Saturday, Trump is expected to nominate a conservative woman to replace liberal Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Federal Judge Amy Coney Barrett is reportedly going to get the nod.
“Today, I am launching an emergency Supreme Court War Room at scotuswarroom.com to help President Trump fulfill his constitutional duty to appoint the next Supreme Court justice,” Cotton tweeted.
Cotton has a small but dedicated political operation that includes an aligned but separately run super PAC. This election cycle, the senator’s political team has advertised on behalf of down-ballot candidates he has endorsed, and he has worked to boost Trump in key presidential battleground states. The Supreme Court war room effort will act as a rapid response unit that answers liberal attacks on Trump’s nominee and issues positive information promoting her confirmation.
Democrats are opposing Trump’s pick on the grounds that the confirmation comes too close to the election. They say the nominee for Ginsburg’s seat should be made by whoever wins the presidential election.
