One of two deliverymen shot by an off-duty police officer during an altercation at the officer’s Accokeek home last week died during surgery Friday morning, according to Prince George’s County police.

Brandon Clark, 22, of the 1500 block of Southview Drive, Oxon Hill passed away at Prince George’s Hospital Center.

“My investigators were notified that Brandon Clark was taken into surgery early this morning and died,” police Chief Melvin High said in a statement. “This is an unfortunate turn of events that now becomes part of the internal and criminal investigation.”

The second deliveryman, Robert White, 36, of Washington, is still in critical condition, police said.

Police initially reported that Cpl. Keith Washington apparently acted in self-defense after he became involved in a dispute with the men, who were delivering furniture to his house. Washington is on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation, police spokeswoman Sharon Taylor said.

No charges have been filed in the case, but Ivey said once the investigations are complete the matter will be brought before a grand jury.

“There are two tracks to the police investigation,” Prince George’s State’s Attorney Glenn Ivey told The Examiner.

Ivey said the police officer, the surviving deliveryman or both men could be charged in the case. He also said there is a chance neither will face charges.
