Colin Powell endorsed Joe Biden to be president of the United States.
Powell, who served as secretary of state under President George W. Bush, delivered an address for the virtual Democratic National Convention on Tuesday night.
“Joe Biden will be a president we will all be proud to salute,” Powell said. “With Joe Biden in the White House, you will never doubt that he will stand with our friends and stand up to our adversaries — never the other way around.”
Powell touted Biden’s leadership abilities stating, “I support Joe Biden because beginning on Day One, he will restore America’s leadership and our moral authority.”
He added, “Today, we are a country divided, and we have a president doing everything in his power to make it that way and keep us that way. What a difference it will make to have a president who unites us, who restores our strength and our soul.”
In June, Powell announced that he would be voting for Biden. Powell endorsed President Barack Obama in 2008 and 2012 and endorsed Hillary Clinton in 2016.
Powell is not the only Republican to participate in this year’s DNC. Most notably, John Kasich, former governor of Ohio, and Cindy McCain, wife of now-deceased Sen. John McCain, appeared at the DNC to endorse Biden.
