SAN MATEO, Calif. (AP) — Authorities in Northern California say two people have been killed after a head-on collision between a van and a commuter bus.

Authorities say a man and a woman were riding in a van when it crossed a center divider and struck a SamTrans bus head-on at a major intersection in San Mateo Friday afternoon.

SamTrans spokeswoman Jayme Ackemann says the woman riding in the passenger seat was pronounced dead at the scene and the man who was driving was taken to a local hospital where he later died from his injuries.

Their names have not been released.

Ackerman says five passengers riding the bus were also taken to area hospitals after suffering non-life threatening injuries.

Authorities say it is not clear what caused the collision. The incident is under investigation.
