NBC shutting down sports channel NBCSN

NBCUniversal announced that it will be shutting down NBCSN, its sports cable channel.

NBC Sports Group Chairman Pete Bevacqua acknowledged the move in a Friday email to the company. Most of the sports programming will be moved to USA Network and to Peacock, the company’s streaming service that was launched in 2020, according to NBC News.

“We’re all aware of how quickly the media landscape is evolving, and our Company is taking thoughtful steps to stay ahead of these trends wherever possible and, in many instances, help set them,” Bevacqua said.

There will be a virtual meeting on Tuesday in which Bevacqua will answer questions about the change. For those with cable, USA Network will be airing the National Hockey League Stanley Cup playoff games and NASCAR races.

“This will make USA Network an extraordinarily powerful platform in the media marketplace, and gives our sports programming a significant audience boost,” Bevacqua said.

Peacock, which first began streaming in July, already hosts much of NBCUniversal’s Premier League soccer content and will soon host more sports content in the future.

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused many companies, including NBCUniversal, to cut costs and reallocate resources.
