Retired Marine colonel: Last-minute challenge to Roy Moore is ‘winnable’

The retired Marine colonel who launched a last-minute bid to win Alabama’s Senate seat over embattled GOP candidate Roy Moore says he thinks he can win.

“It’s winnable,” retired Col. Lee Busby told MSNBC Tuesday morning.

Busby said his campaign already has media recognition, and said he hopes to convert that into getting people out to vote on Dec. 12. Also running in the race is Democrat Doug Jones, and Busby said he thinks he can get voters from both sides to join him.

“I think I will draw from both Roy Moore supporters and Doug Jones supporters,” he said.

Busby said he’s running not necessarily because of the sexual harassment and assault charges against Moore, but because many voters in Alabama feel they don’t have an acceptable choice in the election.

“They’re disgusted, they’re disoriented, and I’m talking to people who are politically active who simply were not going to vote because their choices were the Moore campaign or the Democratic candidate,” he said.

Busby said he has “no interest” in the allegations against Moore, but said he never liked the tone of his campaign, even before those charges surfaced.

“There’s a sense of self-righteousness that comes out of that campaign that bothered me, and I don’t think it represents the majority of Alabama voters,” he said.
