A man died after he hit his head while on a boat and fell into the Potomac River, authorities said.

D.C. fire department spokesman Pete Piringer said authorities were called to an area about a half-mile south of the Arlington Memorial Bridge at around 11:30 p.m. Monday for a report of a person in the water. The man was untieing a rope on his boat that had been tied to another when he slipped. He hit his head, and fell into the water.

He was taken to a hospital where he died, authorities said.

Police are investigating.
