CHICAGO (AP) — Firefighters in Carbondale are moving into a new station even though state officials say there are some building violations related to accessibility.
Carbondale’s WSIL-TV (http://bit.ly/1kZJl7X ) reports the Illinois attorney general’s office says the building isn’t handicapped accessible. Violations outlined in a May letter from the state include the slope of nearby sidewalks.
Carbondale City Manager Kevin Baity says state officials have indicated that since the building was built with public money, it has to be handicapped accessible.
Maura Possley is a spokeswoman for the attorney general’s office. She says the goal is to ensure the building is in compliance.
The old station still houses some equipment, but should be phased out in a few weeks.
