Elon Musk teased a new price for Twitter’s premium service and a revamp to the service’s blue check mark verification methodology as one of the first internal changes in store after his acquisition of the platform.
Musk tweeted on Tuesday that Twitter Blue, the website’s subscription service, will now cost $8 a month. He also laid out a revamp of the way Twitter provides users verification. The new model would prioritize subscribers in mentions, replies, and search, allow users to post longer video and audio clips, and see fewer ads. It would also allow users to bypass paywalls from publishers willing to cooperate with Twitter.

“Twitter’s current lords & peasants system for who has or doesn’t have a blue checkmark is bullshit,” Musk tweeted. “Power to the people! Blue for $8/month.” The billionaire did not provide additional detail on when the features would be active on the platform.

Musk discussed revamping the verification process earlier this week, suggesting that Twitter could charge users up to $20 monthly to get a blue check mark next to their account. If the product is released, it will be Musk’s latest change to Twitter since his finalized acquisition of the company on Thursday. Musk is also considering laying off workers, with some reports estimating that 25% or more of Twitter’s workers would be forced to leave the company.

Musk dissolved Twitter’s board of directors on Monday, according to a Securities and Exchange Commission filing. The billionaire is the sole remaining director of the company and the acting CEO.
Musk’s acquisition of Twitter has turned it into a political point of contention. Republican members of the House requested that Musk hand over any relevant information related to Twitter’s censorship of the Hunter Biden laptop.
