Social media platforms TikTok and Snapchat are settling class-action privacy lawsuits over claims that they unlawfully collected and disclosed people’s privacy data.
Cases were brought against both social media platforms in Illinois with allegations that they violated the state’s Biometric Information Privacy Act.
TikTok agreed to pay $92 million to settle claims it collected and distributed users’ biometric information and privacy data without users’ knowledge. A judge approved the settlement Tuesday, according to ABC-7 Chicago.

In settling its case, TikTok agreed to create data privacy measures to include training and compliance regulations for employees and contractors.
Snapchat has also reportedly reached a $35 million settlement in its Illinois class-action lawsuit, which accused the social media platform of violating the Illinois Biometric Information Privacy Act with the use of facial recognition technology. The settlement is currently awaiting approval from a district court.
If approved, those who have lived in Illinois and used Snapchat lenses or filters between November 2015 and now may be eligible for payment. Settlement claims must be submitted by Nov. 5.
The TikTok settlement comes with a nationwide class and an Illinois class. Those who live in the state of Illinois and have used the app within the state prior to Sept. 30, 2021, are eligible for a settlement payment, which could reportedly be up to six times more than claims in the nationwide class because of the violation.
