Meade High School parents were angered that a student brought a handgun to school Tuesday and dropped it on the floor in the middle of class.

“It is truly an unfortunate incident that this young troubled student that resides in Prince George?s County is attending an Arundel County public school and bringing discredit to our school system,” said Otha Thornton, vice president of the Parent Teacher Association in a statement.

Craig Anthony Richards, 16, is being charged as an adult for illegally transporting a handgun, possessing a gun on school property and concealing a dangerous weapon, according to Anne Arundel police.

Principal Daryl Kennedy sent a letter home with students Wednesday informing parents of the incident.

“Our school resource officer received an anonymous tip yesterday that a student in our school was in possession of a handgun. An additional officer was called to the school, and the officers escorted the student out of class and away from other students,” Kennedy said in the letter.

Appropriate disciplinary action will be taken by Anne Arundel County Public Schools against the student, he said.

Police have not revealed Richards? motive for bringing the gun to school.
