CNN anchor Anderson Cooper accused President Trump’s daughter-in-law Lara Trump of being insincere in the explanation she gave about the “send her back” chants that broke out during a Trump campaign rally in North Carolina.
In an interview Friday with Fox Business, Lara Trump said the crowd began chanting “send in back” in reference to Somali-born Rep. Ilhan Omar, who is an American citizen, without being prompted. She also claimed “it wasn’t the whole crowd, it was just a couple of people right there in the front, but [the president] didn’t say it.”
Later that night, Cooper accused the president and Lara Trump of being dishonest about the situation.
“It continues with his daughter-in-law Lara Trump, who was on TV this morning lying in a way that even contradicts what the president lied about yesterday,” Cooper said. “A couple people. He didn’t say it. I mean, I wouldn’t even normally bring in the daughter in law of the president, but she’s putting herself out there. She has a role in the campaign, and she’s just friggin’ lying.”
Cooper said Lara Trump “primed” the crowd to chant “send her back.” He showed a clip of her saying, “If you don’t love our country, the president said it, ‘You can leave.’ Right?” before the president came on stage.
