Preventing injuries after a heart attack and improving law enforcement officials? ability to analyze pictures on a suspect?s computer are just two projects on which researchers from the University System of Maryland and companies within the state will collaborate.

On Monday, the Maryland Industrial Partnerships (MIPS) program, based on the University of Maryland?s College Park campus, announced the approval of 23 partnerships between the university system and Maryland companies that are trying to develop high tech products.

The companies and University of Maryland, College Park are contributing a total of $3.6 million for the university researchers to conduct their work for the companies.

“The bottom line is we are looking for new technology that we can provide a critical development step,” MIPS program Director Martha Connolly said.

J.J. Finkelstein, president and chief executive officer of Bethesda-based RegeneRx Biopharmaceuticals Inc., said his company will work with researchers from University of Maryland?s Baltimore campus to develop drugs that can treat and prevent injuries after heart attacks.

Raphael Bousquet, chief technology officer of Bethesda-based ADF Solutions Inc., said he was “very excited” to be selected. Bousquet?s company is working on the picture analysis tool.

“It will be able to filter out pictures on the computer that are not relevant to what you are looking for,” Bousquet said. According to Bousquet, the company already can do this, but with help from researchers at the College Park campus, plan to “make it faster and more accurate.”

Since 1987, the 400 different companies have participated in MIPS.

“In that experience, we have played a role in developing products that have sold in excess of $12 billion,” Connolly said.
