Disney taking ‘different approach’ to seven dwarfs in Snow White live-action remake

Disney says it is taking a “different approach” to the seven dwarfs in the live-action version of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

A representative for the entertainment giant released a statement Tuesday in response to Game of Thrones star Peter Dinklage, a member of the dwarf community, criticizing the project for not changing the “backward story” of the seven dwarfs.

“To avoid reinforcing stereotypes from the original animated film, we are taking a different approach with these seven characters and have been consulting with members of the dwarfism community. We look forward to sharing more as the film heads into production after a lengthy development period,” a Disney spokesperson told the Hollywood Reporter.

The project will also feature cultural consultants, the report said, similar to what Disney had for the live-action remakes of Aladdin and Mulan.

Dinklage’s criticism of Snow White took place during Monday’s episode of Marc Maron’s podcast WTF. He also said there was hypocrisy in casting Latina actress Rachel Zegler in the role of Snow White but not fixing the stereotype around the dwarfs.

“Literally no offense to anyone, but I was a little taken aback when they were very proud to cast a Latina actress as Snow White — but you’re still telling the story of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,” Dinklage said. “You’re progressive in one way, but then you’re still making that f****** backward story about seven dwarfs living in a cave together? What the f*** are you doing, man? Have I done nothing to advance the cause from my soapbox? I guess I’m not loud enough.”

Wonder Woman actress Gal Gadot will star alongside Zegler as the Evil Queen, with Andrew Burnap as the male lead. The Snow White project is still years from release. The original Disney animated film was released in 1937 and is based on the 1812 German fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm.
