Web-hosting company GoDaddy has cut ties with altright.com, established by white nationalist Richard Spencer, because the website was found to have advocated violence.
Spencer works for the National Policy Institute, an organization that claims it is “dedicated to the heritage, identity, and future of people of European descent in the United States and around the world.”
According to the Arizona Republic, GoDaddy claimed it typically does not behave in ways that could be interpreted as censorship, and said the company believes in exercising free speech.
But, GoDaddy argued that altright.com “crossed the line” and, as a result, took down the site on May 2.
“It is our determination that altright.com crossed the line and encouraged and promoted violence in a direct and threatening manner,” GoDaddy’s director of global policy Ben Butler said.
Butler said GoDaddy will interfere if a site “crosses over to promoting, encouraging, or otherwise engaging in specific acts of violence against any person.” He added that GoDaddy doesn’t “condone content that advocates expressions of hate, racism or bigotry.”
Spencer told the Arizona Republic he is seeking to revive the site by conducting business with another host in the next few days.
