Trump breaks Twitter silence on Puerto Rico: It’s ‘in deep trouble’

President Trump broke his days-long Twitter silence on Puerto Rico Monday, calling the island in “deep trouble” after spending much of the weekend feuding with the entire NFL.

“Texas & Florida are doing great but Puerto Rico, which was already suffering from broken infrastructure & massive debt, is in deep trouble,” Trump tweeted. “It’s old electrical grid, which was in terrible shape, was devastated. Much of the Island was destroyed, with billions of dollars owed to Wall Street and the banks which, sadly, must be dealt with. Food, water and medical are top priorities – and doing well. #FEMA”

Trump had been criticized for not paying more attention to the crisis in Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria ripped through the island. The American territory was left devastated and it’s expected to be without electricity for months.

It’s not clear if food, water, and medical response from government officials is going well — reports from the island indicate the situation is growing dire for many residents, including 1,000 people who slept overnight in the San Juan airport to try and get off the island on a plane.

The tweets came after Hillary Clinton, Trump’s competitor in the 2016 election, criticized him for not talking about the crisis on the island.
