FUSION OF FLAVORS
Nothing is better than a good food pairing: grilled cheese and tomato soup, milk and cookies, and, of course, the good ol’ fashioned PB&J. But what do you get when you pair foods from two different cultures? A fusion of flavorful goodness. Chef Richard Sandoval, of the Latin-Asian-inspired restaurant Zengo (781 Seventh St. NW), is introducing a “Test Kitchen” series this month, fusing Mexican and Korean flavors into five new dishes. These limited-time recipes include dishes such as Pajeon Seafood Scallion Pancakes and Adobo Roasted Chicken. Thanks to Zengo’s mixologists, you can pair your meal with the perfect Mexi-Korean cocktail, such as a Tecate Hibiscus Cocktail or an Agave Shoju Punch.
The Test Kitchen is available from Oct. 2 to Dec. 31. Each of the new recipes is marked with a “TK” symbol on the menu and will be available for dinner.
THRIFT HEAVEN
It’s like thrifting heaven for thrift shoppers. DC Flea, which hosts one of the region’s largest collectibles and antique shows, is about to start its monthlong pop-up shop here in the District. The festivities begin at 7 p.m. with a fun evening filled with music, fashion and good food. DJ Jahsonic will be spinning some tunes while you get a chance to browse the show’s collection of men’s and women’s clothing and accessories from boutiques such as Speak Vintage DC, Thembe Fashions and I Found That Vintage.
The event will be held at the Montserrat House (2016 Ninth St. NW). There will be a private preview of the merchandise at 5:30 p.m. for those on the DC Flea mailing list. For more information, go to facebook.com/DCFlea.
RACING ROOSEVELT
Conspiracy theorists have many far-fetched ideas, but the latest — which last week made the front page of the Wall Street Journal, a profile by ESPN and even a White House statement — is Washington’s seven-year streak of Teddy Roosevelt loses. The Let Teddy Win movement has been in full force lately, and the Washington Nationals have even requested a one-on-one between the mascot and President Obama.
Well, if Obama wants to head down to Capitol Hill for lunch, our running Roosevelt may get his chance for a meeting. On Tuesday, mascot Teddy is prepping for the playoffs by greeting visitors and posing for photos during lunch from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. at Bullfeathers (410 First St. SE).
It’s only natural that Teddy Roosevelt would hang out at Bullfeathers, as the Capitol Hill saloon is named after one of Roosevelt’s favorite euphemisms — of the “bull” plus four-letter-word kind.
