White House staff will not attend correspondents’ dinner out of ‘solidarity’ with Trump

White House staff announced it will not attend the White House Correspondents’ Dinner out of “solidarity” with President Trump, according to a statement Tuesday from the White House Correspondents’ Association president Jeff Mason.

Trump previously announced he would not attend the event, an annual tradition among presidents and staff, amid an ongoing adverse relationship between the media and the administration.

In a statement, White House press secretary Sean Spicer said the president has been treated unfairly.

The association said it regrets the decision, and Trump and the administration continue to be welcome at the April 29 event.

The typically star-studded Washington, D.C., event took another hit this year when Time and People canceled their annual pre-White House Correspondents’ Dinner party, the magazines announced earlier this month.
